In a letter to Worldrights, dated February 9, 2005, Canadian Foreign Minister Pierre S. Pettigrew expressed his misgivings about the case of Dr. Wang Bingzhang.
Below is an excerpt from that letter:
"Canada is deeply concerned about the nature of the accusations against Dr. Wang Bingzhang and at the harshness of his sentence. The promotion of respect for human rights and freedom of expression is an important objective of Canada's bilateral and multilateral agendas. Accordingly, Canada has raised Dr. Wang Bingzhang's case with Chinese authorities, both on its own and in the context of our human rights dialogue with China. Representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs have also met previously with Canadian members of his family. We will continue to express our concerns about this and other cases on every appropriate occasion."
