Taiwan group calls for fair trial for dissident The China Post staff
The Taiwan-based Chinese Association for Human Rights called for a fair trial for dissident Wang Bingzhang, jailed for life two years ago for "espionage" and "heading a terrorist organization"
"As China has already achieved some success in economic reform, I also call on the PRC authorities to improve judicial human rights and form judgments according to legitimate legal procedures to give Dr. Wang fair treatment," said Chinese Association for Human Rights director Li Yung-ran. "I also call on the international community to pay attention to Wang Bingzhang's fundamental human rights," he said.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights ruled in July 2003 that Wang, a 20-year U.S. resident, was arrested and imprisoned [with] procedures that violated international laws.
Wang was formally arrested in December 2002 after nearly six months in detention in China, which followed his mysterious disappearance from the Sino-Vietnamese border.
One of the accusations leveled at him was spying on behalf of Taiwan.
He was sentenced [in] a half-day trial soon after.
Two other dissidents arrested with him, Yue Wu and Zhang Qi, have since been released.
